ANNUAL REPORT
ASSOCIATES
Associates Program Prospers in
2000
The Associates Program saw continued growth in membership
and activities during 2000.
Numerous legislative and regulatory issues presented
opportunities for its grass roots advocacy statewide.
Associate members from all four chapters (Southern California,
Coastal, San Joaquin Valley/COPS and Northern California)
supported challenges that dealt with diesel fuel, NPDES
permits and unfriendly business legislation. The Associates
also pursued outreach programs at the local level, maintaining
their visibility at city councils, legislative field
offices and state and regional air and water boards.
The success of all four Associates Chapters is expected
to continue in 2001.
New to the Annual Report this year, WSPA asked the
President of each chapter to share some highlights from
their meetings and activities. We thank them for their
leadership and effort in supporting the industry in
2000.
Coastal Chapter -
As President of the Coastal Chapter of the WSPA Associates,
I am proud to report that our membership continues to
grow as our members work to support the petroleum industry
in the Tri-county Area. Once again, our chapter held
three very successful events this year, which helped
increase our membership: the May Mixer at the Harbor
Restaurant on the pier in Santa Barbara, the September
BBQ at Zermeno Park and the always popular Holiday Party
at the Wine Cask in Santa Barbara. The year 2000 was
extremely successful and I enjoyed being President so
much that the board asked me to serve another year.
One of my goals will be to add an additional board member
to handle legislative affairs for our chapter. Another
continued goal is to increase the group's membership.
I look forward to continuing our success in 2001. Coastal
Chapter President Dick Joy is Vice President of Joy
Equipment Protection, Inc., a full-line fire protection
company.
Southern California Chapter
- As President of the Southern California Chapter
of the WSPA Associates, I am proud to report on another
highly successful year. Our chapter increased its membership,
which led to more support of WSPA and its member companies'
activities. It was a busy, yet productive and enjoyable
year. We held seven successful membership luncheons
as part of our speaker series; participated in a legislative
trip to Sacramento where we interacted with our state
legislators as advocates of the petroleum industry;
and raised money for student scholarships at the 2nd
Annual WSPA Associates Golf Tournament in August. I
was proud to serve as President of this great group
and look forward to the enthusiasm carrying over into
2001, while we continue to work together to ensure that
our domestic petroleum industry remains a strong contributor
to Southern California's economic vitality and quality
of life. Southern California Chapter President Ken "Kenny
G" Gibson manages West Coast Sales and Marketing for
Kenny/Manta Industrial Services.
San Joaquin Valley/COPS
Chapter - Wow, what a busy year we had - our
first full year as an Associates Group with a charter
and a budget. COPS/WSPA Associates was intimately involved
in two priority issues. First, multiple members served
on every committee at CARB dealing with diesel exhaust
as a TAC (Toxic Air Contaminant). Without their sacrifice
of time and resources, our industry would have faced
a barrage of unfair and inequitable Risk Management
Guidelines (RMG's) for the operations of our equipment,
which provides services to operators. Second, our own
board member, Dave Lefler, served as one of two industry
representatives for the new overtime provisions that
so dramatically affected the cost of services to our
Operators. We also had the privilege of bringing before
the API San Joaquin Valley Chapter General Membership
a presentation on "Regulatory Issues Affecting the Service
Industry" in September. So as you can see, we stayed
busy getting our "message" out to all who would listen,
because involvement and communication with integrity
is our motto. Terry D. Ellis, Executive Director of
COPS/WSPA Associates, is the HS&E Manager for Gary
Drilling Co., a provider of drilling and exploration
services to major and independent operators.
Northern California Chapter
- In our first full year following organization in 1999,
we've been busy and active. We gathered for four luncheons
averaging attendance over seventy-plus, a half-day workshop
and a cocktail mixer. A very active Board of Directors,
which we expanded from five to eight members this year,
planned all this. This year's focus has been on building
relationships with elected officials. Noted political
advisors Richie Ross and Ray McNally spoke at one of
our luncheons on the importance of advocacy. We followed
that "call-to-arms" with a half-day workshop
on the Value of Advocacy and How to Get Involved. At
another luncheon, John Geoghegan, WSPA’s Sacramento
advocate, informed members on WSPA’s legislative program.
Our successful Social Mixer included over two dozen
local elected officials, key refinery leaders and entertainment
provided by Will Durst, the noted political satirist.
The Northern California Chapter is prepared to play
an active role in the industry’s efforts to foster positive
relationships at the local, state and national level.
John Sakamoto, President of the Northern California
chapter of the WSPA Associates, is Vice President of
Eichleay Engineers Inc., located in Concord.
