Fuel Fee Bills Fail
to Pass Nevada Legislature
In Nevada, WSPA was active in monitoring legislation
that would have imposed an additional six cents per
gallon "smog fee" for gasoline and diesel
sold in Clark County. The bill, which failed to pass,
was the funding companion of successful legislation
to create a new air quality agency for the County. Without
a funding mechanism, the Governor vetoed the authorization
bill and later declared the Clark County Commission
as the lead governing body for air quality matters in
place of the Clark County Health Department. WSPA has
actively participated as a member of the Clark County
Air Quality Forum and has been elected to the new Clark
County Air Quality Management Board's Technical Advisory
Committee.
WSPA took a neutral position on legislation that would
have imposed a one-cent per gallon fee on gasoline and
diesel imported into Nevada. These funds were allocated
for diesel-powered pumps along the Kinder Morgan pipelines
serving Nevada to ensure that California's rolling blackouts
would not affect Nevada's fuel supply. The Senate Finance
Committee killed the bill because the pipeline company
indicated the proposal was unworkable.
