Coastal Resources and Clean Air

   Clean Air

Changes in operations, equipment and technology on offshore platforms off the California coast have made significant advances in cleaning the air.

  • Oil and gas facilities in Santa Barbara County reduced emissions by 62 percent since 1990, compared with a 23 percent decrease in pollutants from all sources in the county.
  • New or expanded oil and gas facilities are required to reduce emissions by at least 50 percent more than the maximum amount of air emissions they are expected to produce under the most adverse conditions. This means new or expanded facilities help bring about improvements in the overall quality of the air.
  • Many offshore platforms have been converted to all electric power to reduce hydrocarbon emissions from diesel or other motors.
  • Technological advances in catalyst design have allowed for cleaner, more efficient engines used to generate power on marine vessels.
  • State-of-the-art technologies are used to monitor and reduce air emissions on an around-the-clock basis.
