and Coastal Resources

Nationwide, offshore oil development has provided huge
amounts of revenues to federal, state and local governments
for a wealth of beneficial programs. Much of this revenue
has been channeled into parks, nature preserves, historic
preservation, interpretive centers, and recreational
facilities, including bicycle trails, swimming pools,
and community centers.
- More than $940 million from the Land and Water Conservation
Fund was used to acquire and improve federal lands,
such as the Channel Islands National Park ($33.6 million),
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area ($150.6
million), and the Los Padres National Forest ($3.5
million).
- More than $15 million from the Historic Preservation
Fund has been used to help preserve California’s historic
properties.
- Parks and recreation projects in San Luis Obispo
County have received $2,475,363 from offshore oil
funds since 1966.
- Parks and recreation projects in Santa Barbara County
have received $2,721,773 from offshore oil funds since
1966.
- Projects in Ventura County have received $12,749,199
in funds from offshore oil since 1966.
- Projects in Los Angeles County have received $49,803,791
since 1966.
- Orange County parks and recreation projects have
received $16,822,089 since 1966.
- Since 1988, the industry has funded, through the
Coastal Resources Enhancement Fund, more than $10
million of local parks, educational projects, hiking
and biking trails, and other public amenities.
