A Three-Day Adventure-Seminar for K-12 Teachers
July 22-24, 2008
Bakersfield, California
Learn from the experts – Tour oil
productions sites – Take learning tools back to
your classroom. Four of the largest oil fields in the
US are located in Kern County where over 200 million
barrels of oil were produced in 2006 alone. Derricks
to Desks gives teachers a first-hand look at the petroleum
industry and its history, technology, careers, challenges
and opportunities.
Teachers participate in seminars with industry experts
and visit several local oil operations for a unique
view of the industry. Additionally, one portion of the
program focuses on lesson plans, projects, experiments
and other ideas which may be integrated into classroom
subjects at all grade levels.
Field Trip sites include Elk Hills field, the largest
producer of natural gas and 5th largest oil field in
the State of California; the West Kern Oil Museum and
Kern County Oil Museum’s “Black Gold the
Oil Experience” exhibit; as well as a special
trip to the natural oil seeps off the coast of Santa
Barbara, the second largest natural seeps of oil and
gas in the world.
Former participants have said:
“The most useful part was learning how the oil
and gas fields actually work. We, as part of society,
really do not understand, nor do we ever take the time
to find out. This seminar was excellent. Keep up the
good work.”
“This was a great experience. Please continue
to educate the teachers in this vital area. Energy is
a critical issue in our country and we need to have
a balanced view of the industry’s sources and
challenges.”
“The lesson plans were good, but my enthusiasm
for the topic, which was gained during the three day
period, will be the motivating factor to teach well.”
