Derricks to Desks

WSPA’s Derricks to Desks program offers teachers an opportunity to participate in seminars with industry experts and visit several local oil operations for a unique view of the industry and earn credits from CSU Bakersfield.  Additionally, one portion of the program focuses on lesson plans, projects, experiments and other ideas which may be integrated into classroom subjects at all grade levels.

Derricks to Desks also includes a dinner with petroleum industry leaders, giving participants the opportunity to learn first-hand the job opportunities provided by the industry, the real-world application of science in the petroleum industry, and the role the petroleum industry plays in the communities in which it operates.

The goals of the Derricks to Desks seminar are to:

  • Emphasize the need for  strong math and science skills;
  • Make teachers aware of the resources available within the petroleum industry to help with student energy education through scholarships, and;
  • Demonstrate that a strong energy education will help meet our future energy needs.

The program is managed from WSPA’s office in Bakersfield and occurs every summer.
