Tom Umenhofer, who joined the WSPA team in December 2015, is Vice President of Technical and Regulatory Affairs. In this capacity, Tom is responsible for managing the four regional operations in WSPA (Southern California, Bay Area, Northwest, and Production Regions). In addition, he serves as WSPA’s overall technical (engineering and science) lead including WSPA staff lead on key technical committees.
Prior to joining WSPA, Tom spent 35 years as an environmental permitting and policy consultant, specializing in air quality, process safety, and pollution prevention. In 1993, he co-founded Sierra-Pacific Environmental, which subsequently was recognized for its environmental leadership. Also during the past 25 years, Tom served as a valued resource to WSPA, with key roles in such regulatory initiatives as California Cap & Trade, California Portable Equipment Registration Program (PERP), and state/federal oil spill policy.
Prior to his career as an environmental consultant, Tom worked for a national engineering firm (Sargent & Lundy) which was preceded by work as a research meteorologist at the University of Chicago.
Tom earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography from Western Illinois University, Master of Science degree in Meteorology from Northern Illinois University, Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, and completed post-graduate studies in Environmental Geomorphology at the University of Chicago.
