When you look at Chevron’s contributions in the Bay Area, it’s clear that everyone in the City of Richmond and Contra Costa County benefits. The company’s operations there do more than support 3,830 essential jobs – in Contra Costa County, and all over the Golden State, the economy is only made possible by their hard work. This was made plain during COVID. Even more evidence arrived in the report released earlier this year by the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation.
Chevron’s Richmond refinery has been the backbone of the area’s economy since 1902. Its men and women deliver gas, diesel, jet fuel and other products that power the region. It supplies 60% of the jet fuel used by Bay Area airports, 20% of the gasoline used to power vehicles in the region and 100% of the lubricating oils on the West Coast. While those numbers are impressive, the refinery provides more than just fuel.
A new study by Oxford Economics looks beyond Chevron’s critical industrial output and examines the broader impact on the West Contra Costa County economy. The report, looking back at data from 2022, analyzes the company’s major contributions to the region, which include jobs, wages, community investments, tax revenue and more.
Here are a few key highlights:
- Chevron’s Richmond refinery contributed $1.1 billion to the local economy – 5% of West Contra Costa County’s total GDP.
- The refinery supports 3,830 local jobs – representing 3% of all employment in the county.
- For every 10 Chevron jobs, the company supports five more in the region (1 of every 29 jobs in the region).
- Chevron employees received 56% higher compensation than the regional average.
- Ongoing community investments in education, workforce development and environmental initiatives support youth development, the environment and job creation.
- Chevron employees contributed 86% more to the economy than the average worker in the region.
The refinery is also home to the Richmond Technology Center, where innovations such as Techron have been developed, delivering more efficient, affordable and sustainable energy solutions.
Chevron’s presence in Richmond reflects more than energy production. The company is a long-term community partner, driving economic stability, innovation and community development for over a century. It is more critical now than ever to support common-sense energy policies that keep companies investing in California, maintaining stable and affordable fuel and power supplies for families and businesses across the West.
